Temperance, by Casa Patas Flamenco Foundation
Direct from Madrid’s oldest flamenco tablao, some of Spain’s hottest and most promising Flamenco performers bring their unique blend of contemporary sensibilities to this venerated cultural tradition. As performers, Rodriguez and Jurado play off of one another with an electrifying sensuality and visual complexity that reinvents this highly passionate art form, and intrigues the seasoned aficionado as much as those are new to the form. Temperence/Templanza incorporates the high artistry of two bailaores and four flamenco singers and musicians for a full-evening concert of original dance and music choreographed and composed by the artists of Casa Patas.
About the Work: In choreographer José Jurado’s words, “Creative temperament is an invisible force found deep in the artist’s blood that makes the heart beat. It is a slow-burning fire in the movement of a bullfighter’s cape, in the steady hands of a guitarist and in the tranquility of a dancer’s soul.” This piece explores the power of creative temperament, which promotes an order from within, simultaneously calming and erupting, sobering and exalting, and mirroring the essence of a Flamenco’s journey through this unique form.

In 2010, UNESCO recognized Flamenco as an Intangible Heritage, bringing to light its significance in world culture and making the undertaking of Casa Patas Foundation all the more crucial. Among the chief missions of the Casa Patas Foundation is to provide support and encouragement for new and upcoming artists by offering master classes, seminars and inter-cultural activities both in Spain and abroad. In past years, the Foundation has also organized a large number of programs, which included the participation of a great variety of artists who performed at the Casa Patas venue as well as in theatres, at festivals and cultural centers in the United States and in other countries. Jose Jurado and Isabel Rodriguez are young artists/choreographers who have received wide attention and prizes for their distinct artistry.
