Miami, FL. FUNDarte presents Out In The Tropics 2020, a yearly performing arts series featuring artists who address issues of Gender Politics, Sexuality, and LGBTQ identity. Now celebrating its 11th anniversary, this provocative program series runs from Thursday, April 23rd<\/sup> to Saturday, June 6th<\/sup> in Miami and Miami Beach.<\/p>\n

Out in the Tropics 2020 will present five distinctive national and international artists in this edition, including the Miami concert debut of Francisco El Hombre<\/strong>, preceded by Miami Based Singer-Songwriter Jay Thomas<\/strong> on April 23rd<\/sup> at 8.00 p.m. at the North Beach Bandshell, Miami Beach; a performative presentation of the book \u201cMi pareja calva y yo vamos a tener un hijo\u201d <\/em>by Legna Rodr\u00edguez;<\/strong> a dance performance of \u201cReprise\u201d by Pioneer Winter Collective on\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>May 1st<\/sup> \u00a0& 2nd<\/sup> at 8:00 p.m. at Miami Dade County Auditorium\u2019s On.Stage Black.Box; and the provocative flamenco dance piece \u201cExtrema\u201d<\/em> by Marco Flores Dance Company, on <\/strong>Jun. 6 at 8:00 p.m. at The Colony Theater.<\/p>\n

8:00 p.m. Francisco El Hombre<\/strong> in Concert!<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t miss this electrifying performance by one of the most powerful new artists from Brazil. Francisco El Hombre<\/strong> is a quintet from Sao Paulo formed by two Mexican brothers and three Brazilians. They are spark and explosion, glitter, and indie rock infused with cumbia and maracat\u00fa. Rolling Stone Brazil called them a mix between Manu Chao and Na\u00e7ao Zumbi, a modern incarnation of tropicalia.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Composed of both Mexican and Brazilian musicians, the group \u201cFrancisco, El Hombre<\/strong>\u201d recorded a song that has become the anthem of the Feminist movement in Brazil with the release of their video \u201cTriste, louca ou m\u00e1.\u201d Their lyrics speak to the current social and political moment in Brazil, and take inspiration from their travels touring in Latin America. 8:00 p.m. \u201cMi pareja calva y yo vamos a tener un hijo\u201d a performative<\/em> reading and book launch by Legna Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong><\/p>\n

Legna Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> is an award-winning Cuban poet, playwright, and short story writer. Her work is often characterized by absurdist humor and playfully perverse observations of everyday life in contemporary Cuba and Miami, as well as cross-genre experimentation with prose poetry and narrative poetry.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Legna\u2019s highly original voice attracted notice and over the next decade or so she was awarded a number of prestigious prizes, both at home and abroad. In 2015 Legna moved to Miami, where she continues to receive literary acclaim. Her first novel, My Favourite Girlfriend was a French Bulldog<\/em>, was released in the USA in 2019.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Contemporary Cuban poetry is as diverse and indefinable as contemporary poetry in any other country, but Legna belongs to a particular generation of poets known as Generaci\u00f3n O, formed mainly of poets born after 1975. This generation is united by the shared experience of growing up after the fall of the Soviet Union, when Cuba was catapulted into extreme deprivation.<\/p>\n

Pioneer Winter Collective is a company of allies that democratize performance through unexpected bodies in unexpected places, producing unexpected social change – powerful stories and voices that transform the cultural landscape.
