The show journeys through memory, highlighting the impact of art as a means of resistance and resilience in the face of oppression. Adapted and directed by Cosme Castro and Óscar Jr. Castro, this real-life story is timelier than ever.

In April 2021, Óscar “Cuervo” Castro, Chilean playwright and theatre director and founder in 1968 of the theatre company Teatro Aleph in Santiago de Chile, passed away in France. Three years later, in December 2024, his sons Cosme and Oscar crossed half the world and the Andes Cordillera, camera in hand, carrying with them, like an unfulfilled promise, a text their father left them: CUERVO, from his unpublished theatrical autobiography.

In 1974, Oscar (known as “El Cuervo”) and his sister Marietta were arrested and tortured by agents of the Chilean military dictatorship. Despite the extreme violence, and resisting despair, Oscar turned his experience in Chile’s concentration camps into a work of art: from Tres Álamos to Puchuncaví-Melinka, via Ritoque in the Region of Valparaíso, he staged a new play each week in the camps’ dining halls, transforming the lives of hundreds of prisoners. Guided by their father’s narrative, Cosme and Oscar Jr. set out in search of former fellow prisoners and friends who had shared in those playful attempts at survival. They visited the camps where he was imprisoned and tortured, retracing his steps throughout his two years of political imprisonment and theatrical activities.

CUERVO is the theatrical, audiovisual, and testimonial adaptation of this story: a staged reading enriched with drawings and sketches, shadows and silhouettes, and images filmed in Chile by his sons half a century later. A documentary performance that juxtaposes Chile of the 1970s and today, exile and the difficulties of returning, weaving through memory and highlighting the impact of art as a means of resistance and resilience in the face of oppression.

(Co-presented with Koubek Center and Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s Away From Home Series with support from Villa Albertine and the Olga Garay-English and Dr. Kerry English Legacy Trust.)

What: CUERVO by Théâtre Aleph & La Comète

Where: The Koubek Center

When: February 5th and 6th, 2027 at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets: TBD

+ Information: (786) 348-0789

Financial and administrative support for this event is provided in part by Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; Miami-Dade County Auditorium Away From Home Series; The Knight Foundation; The Miami Foundation; University of Miami; The Koubek Center; MiamiArtZine and WLRN.

FUNDarte with Koubek Center and Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s Away From Home Series with support from Villa Albertine and the Olga Garay-English and Dr. Kerry English Legacy Trust are proud to present CUERVO, a documentary theater performance by Théâtre Aleph & La Comète (France), at…

[69,200

post-25544","fundarte-event","type-fundarte-event","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-current-season","category-season-2026-2027
["GET
