FUNDarte presents Out In The Tropics 2015, launching with a poetry reading by Miami’s own Chely Lima followed by cocktail reception on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. at The Miami Beach Botanical Garden (2000 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach); Screening of the classic film “Caravaggio” by Derek Jarman on Thursday May 7 at 9:00 p.m. at O Cinema Miami Beach (500 71 Street, Miami Beach, FL 33141); Surveillance Punishment and the Black Psyche a groundbreaking multimedia theater work by M Lamar on Friday May 8 at 8:30 p.m. at the Gleason Room Backstage at the Filmore Miami Beach (1700 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach); Lovebirds a comedic solo play by GLAAD award winner Marga Gomez, from San Francisco, CA, and JARMAN (All This Maddening Beauty) a multimedia performance work written by Caridad Svich and directed and performed by John Moletress of force/collision from Washington, DC, presented as a double bill on Saturday, May 9 at 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at The Colony Theater (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach).

Out in the Tropics also brings exciting free events, including a community-wide panel discussion at the Miami Beach LGBT Visitors’ Center (1130 Washington Ave, Miami Beach) on Tuesday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a casual meet-and-greet opening reception. The festival also presents community workshops, lectures and other educational activities at distinct venues throughout the festival. OITT is Miami’s first and only festival dedicated to LGBTQ artists and issues, and presents music, dance, theater, poetry, film, workshops, lectures, artists’ talks, Q&A’s and backstage mentoring sessions by some of the most dynamic queer artists working and performing today.

Tuesday, May 5^th – 7PM LGBTQ Community Panel and Opening Reception at LGBT Visitors’ Center (1130 Washington Ave, Miami Beach):

~ This informative and entertaining panel discussion features all Out in the Tropics festival artists, along with local LGBTQ artists and activists, providing the local community with expanded possibilities for exploring LGBTQ culture in a safe and encouraging environment.  Following the panel discussion, participants will have an opportunity to meet this year’s visiting artists in an intimate, informal opening recpetion conducive to conversation, intimate personal disclosure, and intercultural exchange.

Wednesday, May 6^th – 7PM Poetry Reading by Chely Lima at Miami Beach Botanical Garden (2000 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach)

~ Chely Lima is a writer, dramatist, poet, journalist, editor, scriptwriter, and photographer. He has written 29 books, among them Discurso de la amante (poetry), and several novels: Lucrecia quiere decir perfidia, Isla después del diluvio, Confesiones nocturnas, and Triángulos mágicos. In his books, he brilliantly combines eroticism, humor, realism, and fantasy. His works have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Esperanto and Czech. His stories and poems have been included in numerous anthologies all over the world. Lima will be reading from his current book of unpublished poems Urano púrpura, which focuses on themes of trans sexuality from the point of view of the author, a transgender and bisexual man himself. The event will be presented in an informal Salon-style in an open-air environment at the magnificent, newly-remodeled Miami Beach Botanical Garden.

Thursday, May 7^th – 9PM Screening of the classic film “Caravaggio” by Derek Jarman at O Cinema Miami Beach (500 71 Street, Miami Beach

~ This year marks the 30^th anniversary of Carravagio’s making and 21 years since the death of Derek Jarman. In commemoration of both of these important dates, the British Film Institute recently completed a new remastering and digital restoration of the film from the original 35mm print. The result is nothing short of remarkable and we’re delighted to bring it to Miami audiences. Caravaggio represents an impressive and enjoyable combination of art and cinema that is now, thirty years on, ripe for rediscovery.

Friday, May 8^th – 8:30PM – Surveillance Punishment and the Black Psyche by M Lamar at the Gleason Room Backstage at The Filmore Miami Beach (1700 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach)

~ M Lamar works across opera, metal, performance, video, and sculpture to craft sprawling narratives of racial and sexual transformation. This music theater piece for countertenor and piano emerges from the constant violent and sexualized surveillance of the black male body—plantation overseer, the NBA, police executions of unarmed black men, the United States penal system. Utilizing multiple live and prerecorded camera feeds, this plantation fantasy explores surveillance from the point of view of a black man condemned to death for the murder of his male overseer with whom he has fallen in love. The work plunges to extreme depths of interracial desire within our interracial culture and history. The text for Surveillance Punishment and the Black Psyche is written by M. Lamar, with additional text by Tucker Culbertson. Music is written by M. Lamar, with art design and live video by Sabin Calvert.

Lovebirds by Marga Gomez In her tenth solo play, GLAAD award winning comic performer Marga Gomez portrays a crew of incurable romantics as they chase their passions  – into the night, through decades, and to absurd lengths in Greenwich Village. Orestes, a macho maitre d’ is infatuated with a tin-eared singer married to an academic who never sleeps and is never awake. On the other side of town Orestes’s daughter cuts off her hair, joins a coven, and starts dating the captain of a women’s football team. Weaving through the action is Polaroid Phillie, an ageless LSD fueled nightclub photographer and fixture at gay bars, Spanish restaurants, street corners and wherever sparks fly.

JARMAN (All this Maddening Beauty) is a performative gesture inspired by iconic queer artist, filmmaker, and gardener Derek Jarman. Temporal orientations arise and fall away as one performer in space traces the origins of Derek Jarman’s brilliant queerness. Merging landscapes of text, video and live performance, JARMAN orientates itself to both present and past, gazing upon the icon through imagined territories and constructed spaces, making room for the possibility of a conversation across time. Performed by force/collision’s Founding Director John Moletress with a text by OBIE Lifetime Achievement Award-winning playwright Caridad Svich, JARMAN is a transatlantic flight through memory and time.
