FUNDarte’s NO BORDERS Series, in collaboration with The Miami- Dade County Auditorium, presents 5 Passos pra não cair no abismo (5 steps not to fall into the abyss) by Companhia Urbana de Dança, a contemporary dance project from Brazil. The company’s program in Miami will be completed with a free community outreach workshop in collaboration with Miamibloco.
Direct from Rio de Janeiro, Companhia Urbana de Dança tears up the stage with a high-energy fusion of hip-hop, samba, capoeira, and contemporary dance in boldly imaginative choreography by Brazilian choreographer Sonia Destri Lie.
Companhia Urbana de Dança brings its dancers’ identities, testimonials, and attitudes to the stage with an upbeat, Afro-Brazilian accent. The group is firmly positioned in Brazil’s most contemporary urban dance scene and internationally, and choreographer Sonia Destri Lie’s boldly original mix of contemporary Brazilian dance and hip-hop infuses both forms with new rigor, meditative one moment, explosive the next. Destri strips it of its easy tricks, locating the true heart of hip-hop and bringing it back to its original emotional depth, expressive range, and poetic integrity. Highly influenced by Brazilian street dance forms, Destri integrates these techniques into her already-established contemporary movement sensibility. Pulling from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, where many of her company members grew up, Companhia Urbana de Dança aims to transcend cultural boundaries while showcasing eclectic skill sets.
5 Passos pra não cair no abismo talked about the stories we lived. The company has found possible paths and dribbled the harshness of their contexts. We start from a place of a society of great disbelief, disillusionment and prejudice, and even spiritual, and you know that all these functions as a chain, where one link pulls the other.”
